Immortal Instants: Toru Tsuzuki Solo Exhibition
November 19 - December 8, 2024
[Overview]
This is a solo exhibition by Toru Tsuzuki, an artist from Saitama Prefecture and currently residing in Numazu City. Starting with a photograph of the Amagi Mountain Tunnel (the former Amagi Tunnel) featured in Yasunari Kawabata's novel "The Izu Dancer," this exhibition explores themes of memory, inheritance, and forgetting, through the question of how to pass on regional heritage to future generations. The exhibition consists of multiple series, including the "Obscure Portrait" series, which blurs facial photographs using urea crystallization; flag works resembling hanging scrolls; and the video work "Ensō," which mimics a circular window. By fusing Japanese Zen Buddhist culture with his unique techniques, Tsuzuki constructed a site-specific exhibition space that incorporates the architectural style of the facility and its historical background as a tatami material wholesaler.
