Numazu Shadow Art Tatami Project
July 19 - 26, 2025
[Overview]
This exhibition is a collaborative project between contemporary artist Hikari Asano and Takashi Inamura, the third-generation owner of Inamura Tatami Shop, founded in 1930. The exhibition utilizes the property of natural rush grass to gradually tan in sunlight, employing a technique of creating shadow puppets by drawing on the tatami surface. The artwork was created through a collaborative effort between the artist and the tatami craftsman, starting with interviews with local residents of Numazu City. The exhibited works ranged from large-scale shadow puppet tatami pieces to smaller works. This exhibition was made possible with a grant from the Arts Council Shizuoka Numazu Citizens' Community Development Activity Support Project.
[Materials and Techniques] Natural rush grass (tatami mat surface), sun-dyed and drawn.
