Yusuke Sugisawa Solo Exhibition —Shukurei—

May 28 - June 23, 2024

[Overview]
This is a solo exhibition by Yusuke Sugisawa, an artist born and residing in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This exhibition, themed "Shukurei" (celebrating spirits), features three-dimensional works such as masks and robots created from toys and everyday objects, as well as paintings. Having been immersed in skateboarding since the age of 14, his perspective on street culture—reinterpreting structures not intended for skateboarding—is the origin of his current creative style of reconstructing everyday objects. As a new work, a video piece was presented featuring Izumi-ryu master and Japanese dancer Yuki Izumi wearing a mask created by Sugisawa and performing the Shukurei dance. The video was screened accompanied by original music by Sugisawa. The theme of "Shukurei," which removes "kegare" (defilement) and celebrates "hare" (auspiciousness), also serves as a question posed to contemporary society, which is undergoing a period of transition.
